thats a crap guide cause its subjective, its just his opinions on the music styles

try this link for proper definitions:
http://en.wikipedia.org

but i think your best bet is just download as much of each style as you can you'll eventually just know which is which

i feel the need to comment on this. Whoever did this has used his own opinions as to what should be what. I clicked on the trance section expecting to find trance and instead found sub-genres, i think on the basis that music is music, just peoples different interpretations of it. Yes i do believe Trance has become a bit over commercalised but i wouldnt go up to Paul Van Dyk and tell him he music sucked ass lol. There is another post about what music should be posted where, and to a certain extent what someone thinks might be trance/vocal trance etc whatever someone else might disagree. And its up to us who are more in the know than others to help explain what should really be where.

It would appear that this guy has mixed up some of his ideas as to what is what also, with anthem trance also being non-trance and i cant help thinking he is american and probably naming genres with the biggest load of bollocks i have ever listened and read about.
no offence to americans but if you dont like it dont listen to it

This guy who created the guide has a section called non-trance, now non trance isnt a genre to to be frankly honest his perception of trance and trance related genres is somewhat different to mine, I tend to put Rank 1 - Airwave as a massive trance anthem, which is why usually when i ask someone to name a song by them this is the only one they know. A big problem here is things are a bit jumbled people listen to what they like and that is it. But then along comes someone who says "what you are listening to isnt what you think it is, its something else" and everything gets confused.

Ill give you a little guide as to what i think is what and why in my opinion it is

Trance - A piece of music that has a sort of emotional melody and then explodes into a very energetic track with a beat somewhere around 120bpm to 135, Paul Van Dyk - For An Angel and ATB 9pm Till I Come best explain this for me i think, you may not agree on the explosiveness but the energy is there i feel.

Vocal Trance - Quite simple trance with vocals in it, in the form of verses, i suppose confusing dance with vocal trance can be a common fault here, id class Ian Van Dahl as Dance because of it pop qualities but id class neo cortex - elements as vocal trance etc

Hard Trance - Has some properties of Trance but is much harder and has a bigger beat.

House - I feel hardhouse is a little slower than trance and is defined by its melody, it has a more swollen bass sound to it.

Hard House - I think hard house is more clubby, with the obvious harder sounds and faster beat, Klubbheads seems a good example.

Happy Hardcore - around 135bpm to 140bpm, something like Dune - I cant stop raving, id classify as happy hardcore, energetic, more or less a continuous melody throughout, Nakatomi - Children of the night is another example.

Hardcore - Um.... Rotterdam Terror Corps would probably explain this the best lol, have a listen lol

Rave - To explain rave as a whole id says happy hardcore but not quite id say Charlie Lownise was rave, something around 140 bpm with an MC, have a listen to anything New Monkey that might help.

Pop - Pop widely varies and its widely opinionated, Britney is Pop, Ronan Keeting is Pop, Girls Aloud are Pop, some people say Red Hot Chilli Peppers are pop and some say rock, and also some pop could be described as dance lol there is also pop - rock, pop- punk lol we'll just say its varied haha.

Techno - Scooter just about sums this section up, its almost like a mix of trance and rave but mixed in a way its uniquer than them.

Hardstyle - Id put this is an American term id say its like hardcore in a way ask lukkdogg about it lol.

Gabber - Um fast as hell, bad bass, i dont like it lol, my opinion though

I cant be bothered with anymore i hope you can see where im comming from

I somewhat agree with you but I do disagree very much when it comes to Techno. I'd say Scooter is stuck in some old rave thing that almost no other group plays. There are some exeptions like Maria (I Like it loud) and shake your ass (they aren't the same genre but they aren't like Scooters "real" music) Too bad I'm not very into techno that means i can't give you an artist to try to explain what I mean but I deff. don't think it has anything to do with Scooter. Well that's my opinion, feel free to keep discussing.

Rave isn't a genre it's a party. The music that can be found at raves: happy hardcore, makina, gabber, dnb, hardstyle, techno, hard trance..
